I use quotation marks, because I do not believe it is a scene at all. Why? The purpose of a scene is support. As a part of my city's local music scene, I know how critical the support and help of people who share the same passions can be. It keeps it alive, it keeps it fruitful, and most importantly, it welcomes newcomers, for the support ant talent they can provide, and to keep the scene growing. The NES "scene" does none of these things. From what I have seen, the NES "scene" randomly selcts individuals and sites to slander and persecute. There is no honor, as people once considered "in" can suddenly find themselves "out" due to someones mood swing, or an ill phrased comment. They try to keep other sites down, and set up a rulebook for what makes you a "real" fan and/or supporter of the NES game system. This is not what a scene is. These are actions of frivolous, deluded cliques and seperatists. In all honesty, it no better than being a Nazi or a jock. I hope "scene" and non-"scene" members alike read this, because I just want to take the time to remind people of a few things: 1. Ther're just games. They're supposed to be fun, not a way to meter your social value. 2. It's just the Internet. If you feel such a passion to fight something, how about something worth while? Like human rights violations, world hunger (this coming from a guy who calls himself FatJohnny ), or a plethora of other causes. 3. By making NES fandom elitist, you are slowly killing it, not helping it. Why should you bother to take anything I say to heart, or even semi-seriously? There is no reason. But I just hope that people can stop petty arguing, and let fandom for a truly magnificent game system flourish. That's all. After hanging out in #nes, they claim that the NESfan staff can't take a joke, are too strict, and try to act more mature and better than everyone else. I'm not saying I condone anyone's actions, but take it from someone with experience FJ, the more you rant about the "scene", the more the problem will grow. To be honest, I think many of them are upset because they want to post here but are banned, or why would they spend so much time complaining? Apparently, this whole thing was a mixup. turtle NES Nut (1/8/01 12:20:05 am) Reply Re: hmmm All this arguing & "scene" crap is starting to aggravate me! I'm going to go hide in my shell. Someone let me know when it's over! Then I can talk about good stuff -- like the NES! To me, the whole thing is a waste of time. If everyone that was involved in it put all of that time into their NES websites instead, think of the incredible content that could be found regarding the NES. I have been with NESfan from day 1. I saw the site as Joey programmed it right from the first few concepts for the home page all the way to opening day. The whole drama regarding the scene stems from pure envy and I say that because not one person anywhere with an NES site works half as hard on it as Joey does. In fact, I think a person would be hard-pressed to find a professional web developer, working on a site he/she gets PAID for, that has put more hours into it than Joey has on NESfan.com. I'm talking in the thousands here...and he has lost money on it every month since it started. With that kind of commitment, you are going to leave the lazy and unskilled in the dust every time. So there we have the source of the jealousy. Joey has had assaults on his work, his character and his life from people that have never met him and most likely never will, all because they cannot match this site. I can tell you this...I have not the patience, time nor consideration to put up with the first month of what he has received in the past year, and as an old friend, I admire him for sticking with it. If you people could see some of the emails he's received...nevermind. I said all of that to lead into this: Iceman, you have always stuck to the rules here and I respect that. But just to clear things up, there is no misunderstanding. Every flaming email Joey has received has been very clear. At the same time, by clicking on the "Terms of Service" link on the home page, anyone can see the restrictions on the use of this site. Like it or not, we have rules here and our approach to those rules is, if you don't want to stick to them, go somewhere else...we don't want you here. Strict? Yes. Unfair? I think not. The point is, every person that has been banned from this site has thoroughly deserved it. As in 100%. I know, I know, they are all innocent, were just joking and can't believe we had the audacity to ban them...whatever...if you believe that, I'll make you a good deal on some oceanfront property I own in Arizona. I assure you. All people are welcome at NESfan.com, until such time that they prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that they have no respect whatsoever for the rules of the site. At that time, we ask them (privately, I might add...rather than the public forums and web pages where we so often find attacks against NESfan.com) to leave. Nothing unfair or complicated about it. After all...why work thousands of hours on a money-losing prospect just to tell people they can't come see it? That's not what we do, that's what the scene does. See the difference? I just wanted to clear that up for any that might be wondering. "Every man dies...not every man really lives." You guys are completely lost, let me get some things straight. "To me, the whole thing is a waste of time. If everyone that was involved in it put all of that time into their NES websites instead, think of the incredible content that could be found regarding the NES." There is not incredible content coming out of this group of people that _you guys_ are labeling the scene? Have you seen OSG? NEStopia? I guess you've been too mesmerized by Coloring Book. And Dragon Warrior Online Adventure is so much fun it should not be legal! "I have been with NESfan from day 1. Yeah, the whole scene concept wasn't around until NESfan came along. You guys act bigger than you really are. Very much so. And I must scoff at your comment of "such hard work", where's it at? Could you point me to this secret section of NESfan where there is substantial content? Unless by hard work you mean all the months he spent as and ad whore. "With that kind of commitment, you are going to leave the lazy and unskilled in the dust every time. So there we have the source of the jealousy." Now theres where I, and others like me, become infuriated. There IS no jealousy, get it through your head. Why do people hate NESfan? Think about it, did anything really happen to start this whole thread? A couple weeks back Bochuck made a post _on another board_ saying you guys ripped off his idea, a post spanning no more than 67 words, and you guys made a 40 post speil of it panning out to the same scene propaganda you are spewing here. THERE is your source of frustration, lots of things like that. I'm not even saying NESfan is a completely bad site, its decent, but you act like its the biggest thing in town therefore you fool a few people into believing you (and man do I feel sorry for new NESers that have found NESfan first). "The point is, every person that has been banned from this site has thoroughly deserved it" Shiek was banned. Explain. Musclesprout was banned. Explain. These two did nothing, Shiek made one post and was banned because he was running NESescity at the time, I have no idea why MS was. "That's not what we do, that's what the scene does." OK, I'm not going to even try to understand what that means Look you guys, the "scene" is not some club. It is just a word, scene, community, whatever you want to call it, it is simply the collective of all websites, forums, and chatrooms that have to do with the Nintendo Entertainment System on the internet, and that INCLUDES you. I can't believe I just wasted my one post before my new IP gets banned on something such as this, but its something that needed to be said. YOU GUYS are the irrational ones here.
